Awareness of genetic tools for methane mitigation in sheep – Online survey 2025

With the support of Sheep Ireland and under the Green ERAHUB funding programme (DAFM), Teagasc is leading a new international project to create knowledge and infrastructure for incorporating genetic merit for low environmental impact traits into national sheep breeding schemes.

The purpose of this survey is to assess the level of awareness regarding genetic tools, associated with ruminants, that can contribute to the mitigation of methane emissions and enhance climate change adaptation. The survey also asks about the favoured mode of participants to access information, which will help the research team to tailor future communications to stakeholders about the project results and the wider subject, through the most preferred routes.

The “Sustain Sheep” project, funded under the Green ERA-Hub call*, aims to create an infrastructure for the incorporation of genetic merit for low environmental impact into national sheep breeding schemes. The overall project is led by Teagasc (Ireland) and includes several different partners from the UK, New Zealand, France, Norway & Uruguay. The main UK partner is SRUC, with contribution from The Texel Sheep Society. In Ireland is Teagasc, with contribution from Sheep Ireland.  In Uruguay is INIA with contribution from SUL, in NZ is AgResearch, in France is INRAe, in Norway is Norwegian Univeristy of LIfe Sciences with contribution from The Norwegian Association of Sheep and Goat Breeders (NSG).
