Texel Sire Genotyping Project

This is an exciting new phase for the Irish Texel Sheep Society. By having these sires genotyped this will allow breeders to sire verify any lamb in the flock book, to promote major genes and build up a bank of Texel genotypes which will allow the breed to identify good/bad genes at a much earlier stage for the benefit of the breed. We are delighted that the facility to order these Genotypes is being done by breeders through their personal Sheep Ireland accounts.

The deadline for ordering free genotypes for stock rams for the 2017/2018 season is fast approaching. Stock rams that were used to sire 2018 born lambs must be genotyped. DNA tags can be ordered free of charge (which also includes the genotyping cost) by breeders via their Sheep Ireland account up until next Friday February 16th2018. After this date the full cost of genotyping will apply. To avail of the free genotyping, it is necessary to identify what rams had been used this season, this is done by recording the rams’ mating’s. Once this is done it is then possible to order a DNA kit on the Genomic Services page free of charge. Help pages are provided on both the mating and genomic services pages should you need any further assistance. For specific queries on ram eligibility breeders are advised to contact the Texel Society directly.
