Ewe Efficiency & Greenhouse Gases

Dr. Fiona McGovern of Teagasc spoke at the ICBF & Sheep Ireland Genetics Conference which took place on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th December 2018 in the Hudson Bay Hotel, Athlone. Fiona spoke on research currently being conducted by herself and Dr. Noirin Mc Hugh (Teagasc). As seen in her presentation she talked about a new ewe efficiency trait that is currently being researched and developed. Majority of the research is taking place in the INZAC flock in Teagasc Athenry. There was a focus on Greenhouse Gas emissions with further research into where optimal strategies to achieve sustainable and quantifiable genetic gain through environmental and economic efficiency. With global warming a hot topic surrounding the agricultural sector in recent years, its important that research is being conducted to address the issue for the sheep sector.
