First of Summer Breeding Workshops held in County Offaly

Sheep Ireland in conjunction with Teagasc are held our first Sheep Breeding Workshops of 2019 yesterday (Thurs 4th July), on the Central Progeny Test (CPT) farm of Andrew Moloney in Edenderry, Co. Offaly. Andrew has an exceptional flock of ewes, with excellent farm infrastructure and sheep handling facilities, which all sheep farmers took learning from. There was a great turn out at this event with up to 80 attendees. The event began at 7pm and catered for both pedigree ram breeders and commercial sheep farmers, with tailored material for both groups. See advert below for the full listing of events and topics of discussion that will be taking place.

Andrew has been a valuable member of the CPT programme since its foundation in 2009. This year alone, Andrew had up to 400 ewes lambed down, with up to 11 rams being used across all his ewes. Andrew also runs a very successful suckler herd with some pedigree Limousin cattle. Andrew was also a participant in the Teagasc Better farm programme for a period of time during which he hosted a very successful farm walk on his farm in the past.

Topics of interest at this particular workshop were:

  • recording ewe mature weights
  • recording management groups
  • recording lameness
