Five-star animals producing more profit and less emissions than one-star animals

Dr. Alan Bohan of Sheep Ireland discusses how five-star animals are producing higher prolificacy levels and higher lamb performance while being more environmentally friendly. Using the Teagasc Lamb Production Model (TLPM), a computer model that stimulates an Irish sheep farm, analysis of the effect of inputs on flock performance and profitability were carried out. Life cycle analysis (LCA) along with the outputs of TLPM model were used to predict greenhouse gas (GHG) emission being produced. In Alan’s full article (found on the Irish Farmers Journal) he details the data used in a study from various research farms and explains two scenarios, a flock of one-star ewes  mated to one-star rams and a flock of five-star ewes mated to five-star rams. The details of scanning rates and profitability levels from each scenario are discussed and highlighted in Alan’s article below.
