Hill Breeding Groups joining Sheep Ireland

During the past year, many Hill breed Groups have been working together with Sheep Ireland, planning actions to support the farmer’s requirements for the Sheep Improvement Scheme (SIS) to purchase a DNA sire-verified ram.

Sheep Ireland has identified 17 hill groups, and we are actively working with these to start genotyping stock rams in preparation for the SIS requirements for this sale season.

Several meetings will take place in the following weeks, organized by Sheep Ireland and the hill groups. These will be communicated to breeders via their group representative.

Last week, the first regional meeting organized by 7 Hill groups took place in Ballybofey, Co. Donegal. It was an excellent opportunity to discuss the benefits of the new SIS with breeders. A discussion on what the members of the groups need to do in order to be in a position to supply SIS-eligible rams to their customers was had.
