Sheep Ireland is now inviting LambPlus breeders to nominate rams for inclusion in the Central Progeny Test (CPT) programme for the 2026 breeding season.
The CPT is one of the most important components of Ireland’s National Sheep Breeding Programme. Each year, the programme generates valuable performance data and creates genetic links between pedigree and commercial flocks. As a result, Sheep Ireland can produce more accurate and reliable genetic evaluations for both pedigree breeders and commercial sheep farmers.
What are we looking for?
Sheep Ireland is seeking high-quality rams from participating pedigree flocks to contribute to the CPT programme. The ideal ram will:
- Have a strong Replacement Index.
- Unique bloodlines to previously used CPT rams.
- Have a good level of performance data available to support evaluations.
- Be used within the breeder’s flock during the 2026 mating season.
- Come from a flock with a strong Data Quality Index (DQI).
While selection criteria apply, all nominated rams will be considered.
Sheep Ireland will collect selected rams in early October and return them to their home flock following completion of the AI programme, approximately two weeks later. During this period, the rams will be used for semen collection and AI purposes only. They will not be used for natural mating and will be housed separately to prevent contact with other rams.
Why nominate a ram?
Having a ram selected for the CPT programme provides significant benefits for both breeders and the wider sheep industry.
Participation in CPT helps maintain and strengthen genetic links between pedigree and commercial flocks. Consequently, Sheep Ireland can produce more accurate breeding evaluations and improve confidence in the figures used when selecting future breeding stock.
Furthermore, lambs sired through the CPT programme contribute valuable performance data. This data helps improve the accuracy of genetic evaluations and assists in identifying the genetics that deliver the greatest profitability and efficiency within Irish sheep production systems.
In addition, rams used within the CPT programme are highlighted in Sheep Ireland catalogues and promotional material. This increased visibility can help raise the profile of both the ram and the breeding flock.
Beyond the benefits to individual breeders, the CPT programme plays a key role in identifying and validating superior genetics within the national flock. Therefore, participation helps support the continued improvement of Ireland’s sheep breeding programme for years to come.

Nomination Deadline
Nominations for the CPT Breeding Programme 2026 will close on Friday, 18th September 2026. Breeders are encouraged to submit nominations as early as possible to assist with the selection process and programme planning.
