The Central Progeny Test (CPT) farms’ lambing season is running very well.
There are over 1,500 lambs already recorded on the CPT farms to date, with over 70% of ewes lambed between both flocks.
All the lambing data is being recorded using the LambPlus App:
- lambing status, date,
- lambing difficulty,
- ewe milk,
- mothering ability,
- sex,
- weight,
- lamb vigour,
- rearing,
- and lamb ID.
The sires will be assigned via DNA predictions using a tissue sample collected from the lamb’s ear at tagging time.
As well as data captured at lambing, the ewes and lambs will be weighed and health inspected 3 times throughout the coming year. All of this data will be contributing to the €uro-Star evaluations throughout the year.
See the below video where John Large, one of our CPT farmers, talks to us about his involvement and collaboration with Sheep Ireland and the work of the CPT:
Among the 2 CPT farms, almost 400 ewes were inseminated with semen from 7 LambPlus breeders’ high replacement Index rams.

All ewes that held to the AI have lambed at this stage.
We are expecting the natural serve ewes to end lambing shortly. 21 rams were used for natural mating that were purchased by sheep Ireland during 2022-2023.

We would like to thank the CPT farmers and the Sheep Ireland Technicians for all their work thus far,
as their efforts continue to positively impact on the national flocks genetic gain.
